Review.
The Herald.
Despite establishing quite a presence through leading his own groups, working with the Scottish Guitar Quartet and Glasgow-based gypsy trio Koshka and, more recently, becoming singer Carol Kidd’s sure-fingered musical partner, Nigel Clark is arguably better appreciated abroad. He’s currently Dutch swing violin virtuoso Tim Kliphuis’s guitarist of choice and previously partnered European guitar heroes Jan Akkerman and Philip Catherine. All of which guides him on this first solo recording. Clark often lets the song’s structure develop by implication and uses contrasting dynamics alongside his edgy, flamenco-flavoured flourishes to create self-sufficient arrangements of jazz standards, bossa favourites, original tunes and Santana’s Samba Pa Ti. Highlights include his own clear-eyed romance, Caso De Verao, a relaxed, swinging How Deep Is The Ocean and a tender reading of Joe Pass’s dedication to flamenco guitar master Paco De Lucia.
