Scottish Guitar Quartet (Instrumental/Jazz)

WHO would have thought it? Four blokes of a certain age and varying musical backgrounds have become the biggest genre-breaking act Scotland has produced in recent memory, rewriting the rules with a natural verve that can take the breath away. Scotland on Sunday The Scottish Guitar Quartet – Malcolm MacFarlane, Nigel Clark, Ged Brockie and Kevin MacKenzie are four of the finest contemporary guitarist around today. Individually they display an outstanding level of musical dexterity. However, when taken collectively their pure musical talent is exhibited to the full. Each have their roots in jazz however, as the SGQ they weave Celtic, classical and world-music strands into their sound to create moods and sound pictures. All four musicians are talented composers, a fact clearly demonstrated by the expressive and elegant serenity of their music. In addition they draw upon the diversity of their previous experience, from Nigel’s work with Hue And Cry to Kevin’s in the traditional folk band Keep It Up and Malcolm’s work with Barbara Thompson’s Paraphernalia, Shakatak and Ged writing for the Edinburgh Festival Productions and the RSNO and SNO(pera).
